rainh2o.com: Technical Support
I'm no expert, as X is an unknown quantity, and a spurt is a drip
under pressure, which makes an expert an unknown drip.

But I do have some experience with and opinions about keeping personal
computers running well.  This page is intended to provide free advice for those that
are not ordinarily extremely aware or cautious of Internet dangers.

Considering the price, you should take into consideration the old maxim that "you
get what you pay for."  And, as such, I accept no liability for your use of any
information on this site.

  1. That having been said, my first suggestion is the one you'll most likely
ignore: Routinely back up your files.  There are dozens of ways to do so,
many of which are not, really, all that difficult.  Unless you have nothing of
value, it is a habit you won't ever regret.
  2. Install a router between your computer and your Internet connection.  A
router acts as a hardware firewall.  This, alone, protects you in so many
ways.  Unless you're a security expert, or are intentionally trying to trash a
computer, never, ever, attach a computer directly to an unsecured
Internet connection like a cable or DSL modem.
  3. In my opinion, even more important than having anti-virus software, you
should buy and install BoClean, a stellar anti-Trojan application that is
easy to use, and requires very little memory and disk space.
  4. Obtain, install and keep an up-to-date, anti-virus solution.  There are many
available, some of which are free for personal use, but remember the
    maxim mentioned above.  DOWNLOAD.com
  5. Download and install one or more anti-spyware solutions.  I use Ad-Aware
and Spybot Search & Destroy, both of which are available free for
    personal use.
  6. Obtain and install a software firewall.  Again, many are available, some of
which are free for personal use.  DOWNLOAD.com

The use of these tools and a little common sense will give you peace of mind and
make your online experience easier and more enjoyable.
